The election process for the party leadership has begun at the general convention of CPN (UML) in Butwal Saturday evening after leaders failed to reach a consensus for the post of chairman.

Party leader Ishwar Pokhrel announced the election schedule organising a press conference. The voters list with the names of 1820 convention delegates has already been published.

According to the announced schedule, the filing of the nominations will take place till 7 pm. The list of candidates will be published at 8 pm.

8 pm to 9 pm is scheduled to settle disputes over the candidatures. The final list will be published at 10 pm. Voting will take place between 9 – 10 am on Sunday. With this, the general convention, which was scheduled to end today, has been prolonged by one day.

It has been certain that erstwhile general secretary Jhala Nath Khanal and party leader KP Sharma Oli will contest for the post of chairman.

Meanwhile, party leaders and workers have expressed dissatisfaction over the leaders’ inability to reach consensus.

Former general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal said he would win if he chose to contest, but he would not do so as the party would lose in that case.

The youth leaders who had started a hunger strike calling on the senior leaders for a consensus for the party chair have said they would continue the strike if a consensus is not reached. Some party cadres have said they would boycott the voting process if the top leaders did not go for consensus candidate for new party officials.

A few leaders said they would not even file candidature for central committee member if top leaders fail to reach consensus. According to the new statute, the party will have eight officials at the center – chairman, three vice chairmen, general secretary and three secretaries.
