Leaders of the agitating Tharu community have refused the government’s call for dialogue saying their demands had not been addressed by the cabinet meeting.
The agitation will not stop and talks will not be held as the government has not revoked the ordinance that enlists Tharus as Madhesis, not announced cadres killed in Chitwan as martyrs and not released cadres arrested during the agitation, said Rajkumar Lekhi, general secretary of Tharu Kalyan Karini Sabha.
The agitating Tharu organisations and other organisations supporting their cause including the Nepal Indigenous Organisation rallied in the capital and held a gathering in memory of the two youths killed in Chitwan by police firing last week.
The leaders said the agitation would continue and announced further programmes for it. Cadres demonstrating in various Terai districts vandalised more vehicles and disrupted normal life after their refused dialogue and announce to continue the agitation.
A cabinet meeting Monday morning formed a talks-team led by Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Janardhan Sharma and also prepared a draft of its proposal to the Tharu community.
Minister for Physical Planning and Works Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar, named mediator for the talks, was busy trying to convince the Tharu leaders for talks throughout the day.
Minister Gachchhadar has said effort to bring the agitating Tharu community to dialogue is on and expressed a possibility of talks till late on Monday.
It is learnt that the government is ready to amend ordinances and the interim constitution to address the demands of the agitating Tharus.
Meanwhile, CPN (UML) chairman Jhala Nath Khanal met Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and asked him to withdraw the ordinance on reservation immediately.
